Techniques
1. Duncan E-Z Strokes underglaze for greenware or bisque may be applied over most underglazes, including
DuncanCover-CoatTM and other Duncan E-Z Stroke
colors, allowing the base color to show through.
2. Duncan E-Z Strokes work well with high fire, cone 5-6 and some to cone
10. As high results vary, we recommend firing a test piece.
3. For majolica, apply Duncan E-Z Stroke underglaze design work over unfired White
Satin glaze.
4. As a pure pigment-based paint, Duncan E-Z Strokes is the simplest form
of fired color. You can use Duncan E-Z Strokes just like watercolors, in
layers of transparent/translucent, bold, pure color. And, just like
watercolors, you can inter-mix all the Duncan E-Z Strokes colors. Just as
for typical watercolors, these paints must be mixed with water to be
applied properly to greenware or soft fired bisque for the best
application. Duncan E-Z Strokes are very fragile unfired, because when the
water dries out of the pigment there are no binders holding it in
place.Duncan E-Z Strokes underglazes fires into the ware at an 04 or hotter cone,
although most of the pigments will hold true up to a cone 10. This
broad firing range allows artists to use Duncan E-Z Strokes
underglazes on almost all
clay bodies
5. Use Duncan E-Z Strokes to tint clay slip, most glazes, fired Snow and
other Duncan E-Z Stroke colors.
6. High definition and detail can be achieved by adding water to
Duncan E-Z
Stroke underglaze color and using a very fine brush.

beneath it. They must be fired to ensure maturation and stability.

Instructions
1. Gently scratch crisscross lines on areas to be joined.
2. Using a soft brush, moisten scored areas or broken edges with
water. Use the same brush to apply a good coat of Duncan Patch-A-Tatch to
these areas.
3. Quickly attach or fit the pieces together and hold securely for a
few seconds.
4. Brush a little Duncan Patch-A-Tatch over the joint and, when set and
thoroughly dry, scrape, sand, sponge or otherwise finish, and the

1. Shake jar and stir well.
2. Always dampen brush or sponge thoroughly with Duncan Brush
Cleaner and squeeze out excess before loading with Duncan Wax Resist.
3. Apply 1 good coat of Duncan Wax Resist over greenware, bisque,
underglaze or glaze.
4. Allow Wax Resist to dry thoroughly before proceeding with
technique.
5. Gently remove excess color from resist areas with a dampened
sponge before firing.
6. Fire greenware to shelf cone 04.
7. Remove any loose perticles of fired underglaze with stiff bursh
before glazing. Glaze fire to shelf cone 06.
8. Clean brush in Brush Cleaner and rinse in warm water immediately
after use. Wipe rim of jar and inside of lid, then close tightly.

1. For underglaze designs, apply base coat of underglaze color to
greenware. Paint design with Wax Resist over base coat. When design
is thoroughly dry, apply contrasting color over the ware. Bisque
fire to shelf cone 04. After bisque firing, remove loose underglaze

2. For glaze designs, paint designs with Wax Resist directly on
shelf cone 04 bisque or over 3 coats of dry, unfired glaze applied
to shelf cone 04 bisque. When Duncan Wax Resist is dry, apply 1 coat of a

1. Apply one good coat of Duncan Write & Peel to desired areas.
2. Allow Duncan Write & Peel to dry thoroughly before applying color over

3. When removing Duncan Write & Peel, lift the edge of the masked line with
a tool or fingernail, and use fingertips to peel the mask off. In
this way, the mask can usually be removed in one peice. However,

color to greenware. Apply design with Duncan Write & Peel over base coat.
When design is thoroughly dry, apply contrasting color over the

application of Duncan Write & Peel. More colorful designs can be acheived
with additional layers of Duncan Write & Peel and color (except translucent underglazes) as long as the mask is removed after each color
application.

shelf cone 04
bisque or over 3 coats of dry, unfired glaze applied to shelf cone
04 bisque. When mask is dry, apply one coat of a second glaze color,

glaze can be used.
3. For nonfired color designs, apply Duncan Write & Peel directly to bisque
for protection of areas while applying adjoining colors or apply

1. Always dampen brush or sponge thoroughly with Duncan Brush
Cleaner and squeeze out excess before loading with Duncan Mask ' Peel to
desired areas.
2. Apply one good coat of Duncan Mask 'n Peel to desired areas.
3. Allow Duncan Mask 'n Peel to dry thoroughly before applying color over
it. Heavy applications of Duncan Mask 'n Peel tend to dry on the surface
before drying underneath. When this occurs, Duncan Mask 'n Peel peels off
in layers. For this reason, any heavy areas should be checked for
traces of Duncan Mask 'n Peel before proceeding with the technique.
4. When removing Duncan Mask 'n Peel, lift the corner of the masked area
with a tool or fingernail, and use fingertips to roll the mask
toward the area rather than away from it. In this way, the mask can
usually be removed in one peice. However, always check for any small
particles that may be left behind.
5. Always use Duncan Mask 'n Peel in a well-ventilated area.
6. Clean brush in Brush Cleaner and rinse in warm water immediately
after use. If Duncan Mask 'n Peel should accidentally dry in the brush
before it can be cleaned, soak in Antiquing Solvent or mineral
spirits to loosen residue, then wash in warm, soapy water to
complete cleaning. Wipe rim of jar and inside of lid, then close
tightly.

About Duncan Mother of Pearl
Basic
Instructions
1. Be sure that the surface of your piece is free of dust, skin oils
and lotions to ensure proper adhesion. Wipe surfaces with rubbing
alcohol prior to applying the overglaze (except when used over
crackle glazes.).
2. Always apply with a brush that is designated solely for use with
Mother of Pearl to prevent contamination.
3. Do not stir or shake glaze.
4. Place a small amount of overglaze on a glazed palette.
5. For a swirled look, swirl on 1 coat, overlapping strokes.
6. For a smooth look, brush on all strokes in the same direction.
7. Correct application should produce a light blue tint.
8. Clean brush in Duncan Essence and let dry.
9. Overglazed ware can be fired while it is still wet. The kiln must
be clean, well-ventilated (do not overload) and follow a normal
firing schedule. Do not touch wet decoration and handle as little as
possible until ware is fired to avoid smudging.
10. Stilt and fire Duncan Mother of Pearl to shelf cone 020.
Tips &
Techniques
1. The appearance of Duncan Mother of Pearl will vary with the type of
glaze over which it is applied. When applied over a gloss glaze,
Duncan Mother of Pearl will add a shiny luster. When applied over a matte
glaze, Duncan Mother of Pearl will add a dull luster.
2. If Duncan Mother of Pearl is accidentally applied on the wrong area, dip
a cotton swab in Essence and wipe off misplaced color.
3. If any areas are missed, go back and touch up before Duncan Mother of
Pearl dries.
4. If using a metallic overglaze and Duncan Mother of Pearl on the same
piece, apply and fire the metallic overglaze first.

1. Overglazes contain solvents and should be used in a
well-ventilated area. Those susceptible to odors (such as pregnant
women) shold be especially careful to work only in areas with an
adequate ventilation system. During firing, odors are not dangerous
but can be offensive. These odors quickly leave the area; however,
you should not work in the kiln area during firing.
2. Duncan Overglazes can be used on surfaces that come into contact
with food and drink. Care must be taken to avoid hard scrubbing when
washing overglazed ware, because of the possibility of scraping off
the thin layer of metal or luster. Treat your overglazed pieces as
you would fine china. Although overglazed ware will take repeated
washings in a dishasher, the overglaze will eventually wear away.

Instructions
1. Stir contents of jar thoroughly before use.
2. Snows can be applied with many different tools. Try using a
brush, a palette knife, a sponge or a pastry tube. Rinse tool or
brush frequently to avoid product buildup.
3. Allow to dry between coats and 24-48 hours after final
application.
4. Apply to shelf cone 04 bisque.
5. Clean up with water.

Techniques
1. Cake decorator technique: Use palette knife to fill pastry tube
with Duncan No-Fire Snow or Duncan Glittering No-Fire Snow. Select tips with large
design openings as these products might clog smaller openings. Use
slow, steady pressure to squeeze design onto surface to be decorated.Clean design tips thoroughly and dispose of the pastry
tube.
2. Brush design techniques: Load a round synthetic bristle brush
heavily with Duncan No-fire Snow or Duncan Glittering No-Fire Snow allowing a
small amount of the product to remain on the tip of the brush
bristles. To create raised flower petals and leaves, place tip of
brush at end of flower petal or base of leaf. Then press down on the
brush, slightly rolling the bristles as stroke is pulled out. Allow
to dry for 24-48 hours, then paint design with acrylic colors.
3. Palette knife technique: Nonfired Snows can be applied with a
palette knife to create landscapes and designs. Experiment with
pressing, pulling and twisting motions with the palette knife for a
variety of raised effects. Allow to dry for 24-48 hours, then paint
design with acrylic colors.
4. Holiday Decorations: Duncan Nonfired Snows can be added to completed
projects--ceramic bisque, wood, plaster, glass tree ornaments,
grapevine wreaths, greeting cards and more.Duncan Nonfired Snows are not
recommended for decorating holiday windows as they are permanent
when dry.
